RITA has a set of aims and goals that it would like to achieve to help the people of Beruwala return to their normal lives, and hope that with the help of the people of Reading this can be achieved.
We will post updates here on the current projects being undertaken.
A suitable plot of land was purchased at Gorakaduwa on high ground well back from the coast, the area of this land is 0.354 ha. The land has been cleared and levelled with the first of twelve houses having now been completed and handed over to the first family. The second home is currently under construction.
The work regarding the water supply at Rangers Road Camp has now been completed.
The mortuary was located on the waterfront adjacent to the mosque and was washed away by the tsunami. The new mortuary is being built on the same location with funds being raised by RITA from mainly the Muslim community in Reading. The main structure is complete but finishes, fixtures and fittings are yet to be installed.
As well as addressing the physical needs of the tsunami victims, RITA is promoting the return of tourism to the Beruwala area in order to address the social and economic needs. RITA is also encouraging links between the people of Beruwala and Reading especially through schools in the respective towns. We will use a community technology training facility funded by the town of Gisborne, in New Zealand.
RITA is planning to arrange for internet connections and further equipment so that email can be used for the inter-school communication.
